The Level family’s aging wood deck had reached the end of its life, presenting a safety risk and a structural dead end. Because the upper deck sat nearly twenty feet above the ground, this was never going to be a “simple” replacement.
The homeowners envisioned a space that would eventually become part of their forever home in retirement—a sanctuary built to outlast traditional lumber. To achieve this, we moved beyond wood and proposed a full structural upgrade to a steel-framed system.
Build: Blueprints, Steel, and Long-Distance Trust
Executing a project of this magnitude requires absolute precision, especially when the homeowners are relocated for military deployment. We managed the entire process remotely, maintaining a “Zero Compromise” standard through every phase of construction:
- Creative Engineering: To protect the existing patio below, we needed to reuse the original pier locations. Our team tracked down the original blueprints and permits from the home’s initial construction, allowing us to align our new steel design perfectly with the existing foundation.
- The Steel Advantage: We utilized New Castle Steel framing and posts to create a rock-solid skeleton. Unlike wood, which warps and rots, this high-performance system provides a perfectly level surface that remains stable regardless of Missouri’s weather shifts.
- Remote Management: While the family was stationed elsewhere, we maintained the build’s momentum through regular calls, emails, and video meetings. We paused the start for over a year to accommodate their schedule, ensuring they were ready when the first post was set.
- Premium Fastening & Finish: We integrated specialized hardware from Simpson, Starborn, and Fastenmaster to ensure maximum structural tension. The surface was finished with Deckorators Voyage decking—selected for its durability and slip-resistance—and a sleek Westbury rail system.

After more than a year away, the family finally returned home to see their vision realized. Stepping onto the perfectly level, solid surface of their new deck, they were thrilled to find a retreat that was finally ready for their retirement years.
