Reducing Complexity via New Castle Steel

Carrie and Ron replaced a failing wooden deck with a structure that prioritized style and function. Primary objectives involved framing a scenic lake view while eliminating the cluttered support system beneath the original build.

  • Structural Efficiency: Utilizing New Castle Steel and American Ground Screws, Solid Ground reduced the original eighteen posts down to four. Maintaining the same footprint while removing 75% of vertical supports created an open environment.
  • Stable Foundation: Ground screw technology provided a permanent foundation without the disruption of traditional concrete excavations, providing immediate stability.

Preserving sightlines remained a priority throughout the design process. Every material reflects a commitment to the surrounding landscape and homeowner comfort.

Unobstructed Sightlines

Solid Ground installed Deckorators Cable Railing so the sunset over the lake remains the focal point. Stainless steel cables provide a secure barrier while remaining virtually invisible, allowing the natural beauty of Warrenton to take center stage.

High-Performance Surfaces

The deck surface is made of Deckorators Voyage decking. Selected for a mineral-based composition, Voyage provides superior slip resistance and heat management. 

Qualities like those make the surface ideal for barefoot evenings outdoors. Camo edge fasteners provide a clean, fastener-free finish across the expanse.

Custom Solutions: The Cat Ramp

Innovation happened during the final phase of construction. While the initial plan excluded stairs, a unique requirement for pet accessibility emerged.

Using steel joists and matching Voyage decking, Solid Ground constructed a custom “Cat Ramp.” A bespoke feature integrates with the steel frame, providing a safe transition for pets. Results show a deck serving every member of the household, cat-tested and approved.
