A 1900s Farmhouse Gets a 21st-Century Outdoor Space
The Truxton property had something most projects don’t: a view that does the work. Open farmland, rolling tree lines, and a horizon in every direction. The project’s job was to build something worthy of that setting, a space that matched the scale of the surrounding land without competing with it.
Built for a House That Has Stood for Over a Century
Character and permanence come with a 1900s farmhouse. Anything attached to it has to be built to the same standard.
Solid Ground anchored the platform on a 14-gauge New Castle Steel frame set on American Ground Screws below the frost line. Steel holds its geometry through Missouri’s freeze-and-thaw cycles without flexing or settling; the right foundation for a space this large on a property this historic.
How It Came Together
- 14-gauge New Castle Steel frame anchored on American Ground Screws
- 1,600 sq ft composite deck platform wrapping the rear of the farmhouse
- Herringbone inlay worked into the composite deck surface
- RDI cable rail system across the front, keeping the views unobstructed
- Black baluster rail along the sides
- Custom outdoor kitchen built into the deck with Adorn stone cladding
The herringbone inlay.
A herringbone pattern requires precise cuts, careful layout, and a dimensionally stable frame to hold tight geometry over time. On the Truxton deck, it runs across a significant portion of the platform, a detail that rewards a closer look without announcing itself from a distance.
The rail system.
Two rail types, each chosen for its position on the deck. RDI cable rail runs across the front where the views are, with horizontal cables that disappear into the landscape and keep the sightlines open. Black baluster rail runs along the sides, where enclosure matters more than the view. The result is a perimeter that serves the space differently depending on where you’re standing.
The outdoor kitchen.
Five appliances, granite tops, full bar service, and stainless steel storage built into a custom Adorn stone structure. This isn’t an accessory bolted to the side of a deck; it is a fully outfitted outdoor kitchen designed to the same standard as the one inside the house.
- Big Green Egg
- Recteq Pellet Smoker
- Blaze Griddle
- Bar service with refrigeration
- Stainless steel storage throughout
Finishing without a trace.
CAMO Wedge Metal hidden fasteners keep the composite surface clean across all 1,600 square feet; no visible screws interrupt the herringbone pattern or the field decking. Starborn color-matched screws and plugs close every structural connection so the hardware disappears into the finish.

One View Worth Building For
The Truxton project started with a view and ended with a space that earns it. If your property has that kind of setting, let’s talk about what it takes to build around it.
