A Brand New Home with No Place to Go Outside

The Manahans had moved into a newly built home with everything they wanted inside and nothing outside. No deck. No connection between the main floor and the yard. Just a door that opened onto a drop.

The home added a specific constraint: a bump-out with a doorway positioned in the middle of the rear elevation. A standard deck layout would have buried that door or forced a choice between access and usable space.

A Two-Tone Surface

A picture frame border in a contrasting composite tone runs the full perimeter, drawing a clean line between the field decking and the edge. It provides a large platform visual structure without adding complexity to the space.

Black aluminum baluster rail with a composite top cap runs along the full perimeter of the staircase. The top cap matches the decking tone, keeping the material palette consistent from the surface to the rail.

Privacy Below

Below the deck, a space was designed specifically for the hot tub; enclosed on two sides by the home and the underside of the deck, sitting apart from the main level while staying connected to the yard and rear entry. Where the deck above is open and social, the space below is quiet, set back, and built for a completely different pace.
