The Challenge: A Failing Deck and a Structurally Unsafe Roof
This Lake St. Louis homeowner faced more than just a rotting wood deck. Upon removal, it became clear that the roof above the space had been poorly supported and posed a safety risk. The structure required complete reconstruction, including new beams that tied into the home’s frame and foundation to meet proper load-bearing standards.
Project Highlights: Structural Reinforcement and Space Expansion
We stabilized the existing roof with temporary supports, removed the original framing, and installed new LVL beams into the home, carried by jack studs and supported by 20-foot steel posts from New Castle Steel. The new deck expanded the footprint by over 250 square feet. Below, we added a 700 square foot dry zone using the Haven Underdeck system. Radiant heat and ceiling fans were installed to maximize comfort and extend seasonal use.
The Results: A Stronger Structure With True Multi-Season Use
This project transformed a failing and unsafe deck into a structurally sound, low-maintenance space that can be used well beyond summer. With added square footage, integrated lighting and climate control, and durable steel and composite materials, the homeowners now have a beautiful upper deck and an expansive, protected space below that will serve their family for years to come.
